‘I was forced out,’ Ireland says of Man City exit to Villa

BIRMINGHAM, United Kingdom (AFP) – Former Republic of Ireland midfielder Stephen Ireland says he is delighted to have moved to Aston Villa despite claiming to have been forced out of Manchester City.

After struggling to find any way to re-establish himself in manager Roberto Mancini s plans with City, Ireland was offloaded to Villa as part of the deal that saw England midfielder James Milner going the other way.

The 23-year-old Ireland went from being the Player of the Year at Manchester City for the 2008-09 season to playing little part under Mancini after the Italian took over last term.

I thought that was really unfair. I was first in and last out of training and no one worked any harder than me, he said of claims he had a suspect attitude last season.

Suker teases Spanish media about Rakitic future

Former Croatia international Davor Suker claimed on Sunday he knows where Sevilla midfielder Ivan Rakitic will play next season.

Rakitic, who captained Sevilla to UEFA Europa League glory this season, has one more season on his contract but is widely expected to be sold by the Spanish club, so they do not miss out on a transfer fee.

I know where he ll be playing next season but I can t say anything, Suker told Cadena Cope.

Rakitic is set to be included in Croatia s final squad for the FIFA World Cup.

Two years ago on their Champions League debut, Cluj had stunned the hosts here with a 2-1 success but there was to be no repeat despite the Romanians twice hitting the woodwork.

After a slow start, the game exploded into life on the half hour mark as the visitors should have …

Mourinho rules out United return for Ibrahimovic

Manchester United have no interest in bringing Zlatan Ibrahimovic back to Old Trafford during the MLS off-season, according to manager Jose Mourinho.

Ibrahimovic joined United on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in 2016 and scored 28 goals in all competitions that season.

However, the former Sweden star suffered a cruciate ligament injury before the end of the campaign and, after battling back to first-team action by the end of 2017, he moved Stateside to LA Galaxy.

In 26 league games for the Los Angeles side, the 37-year-old has struck 22 times, while United s first-choice striker Romelu Lukaku is in the midst of a much-discussed lean spell.

Nevertheless, Mourinho is not interested in in offering Ibrahimovic a route back into European football as…

Mourinho in the dark over transfers as Pogba rumours swirl again

Jose Mourinho claims he does not know whether Manchester United will bring in January signings amid reports the Premier League giants will look to sell Paul Pogba in the next transfer window.

United face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, where defeat would leave them 19 points behind their title-chasing rivals.

Mourinho has frequently voiced his displeasure at United s failure to secure the reinforcements at centre-back he wanted for this season and a perceived disparity in spending between his own club and others in the upper echelons of England s top flight.

Pogba has been on the bench for United s previous two Premier League games and his most notable contribution to the midweek Champions League defeat in Valencia was a glaring close-range miss.
